INDIA IN UN SECURITY COUNCIL

INDIA'S CLAIM TO UN SECURITY COUNCIL

Recently India was selected unanimously as a non-permanent member for the UN security council  from the Asia-Pacific region.India has been eyeing a permanent seat in the UN security council for a long time.

UN SECURITY COUNCIL:

The UNSC is one of the six organs of United Nations established under the UN charter. Its primary objective is to maintain international peace and security. There are 5 permanent members and 10 non-permanent members in the UNSC.The P5's are USA,UK,Russia,France and China. The non-permanent members are selected for a period of 2 years.

CRITERIA TO BECOME A PERMANENT MEMBER:

A permanent member is expected to provide it's support to the UNSC in all aspects to maintain the international law and order.Though this doesn't mean the member has to posses nuclear materials but it must have a strong trained military at par with international standards. The permanent members should also possess a strong economy.

INDIA'S CLAIM:

*) With its improvising economy and rising GDP India is all fit to be a permanent member.

*)India is one of the founding members of the UN organisation

*)India is one of the largest  contributor to UN peace keeping force

*)India's foreign policy has always aimed at international peace and for years it has championed the cause of Non aligned movement.

*) India is a developing country and it is likely to have a developing country in an important organization to hear the voice of other similar nations.

*)India is the largest democratic as well as the largest secular government.

DRAWBACKS:

*)India is not a member of nuclear non-profileration treaty.India hasn't signed this treaty because it feels the treaty is discriminatory towards developing nations by the developed ones.

*)India has standing border disputes with China and Pakistan as well as minor disputes with Bangladesh and Nepal.

*)Even though India possess a large trained military,it lacks modernisation.

*) Indian economy is still not in par with the other permanent members.

WAY FORWARD:

Inorder to pursue it's bid to join the UNSC India formed an alliance with Germany,Brazil and Japan in 2005 to give momentum to its claim.Such alliances are welcomed.Apart from France no other nations have supported India's claim.Hence,India needs better diplomatic talks and negotiations with these countries for their support.Above all India needs to achieve self sustainability and project itself as a global power.
